The Big Picture

The Big Picture

We are so focused on Donald Trump that we sometimes miss the bigger picture.  Donald Trump saw an opportunity when he realized that by unifying the various elements of the conservative movement he could propel himself higher in the national spotlight.  But in the final analysis, Donald Trump is just an opportunist, and he certainly isn’t the brains behind the far-right movement.  Other people wrote Project 2025, and those individuals are the power-players behind the scene who are fulfilling the conservative agenda through the Presidency of Donald Trump.  The fact is, Trump uses them, and they use him.  When Donald Trump is no longer President, the people who attached themselves to his rise to power will not disappear.  It’s possible they could become even more effective under the leadership of somebody else who is dangerously competent.  We should continue to resist the actions of the current administration, but we should not be deceived into believing that everything will revert to normal when this President leaves office.  The backers of the current far-right conservative movement have tasted unbridled power and they aren’t going to give it up easily.  Those of us in the Progressive Movement need to face the reality that our fight to save Democracy is just beginning, and it’s going to take a long time.  Regarding making a commitment to achieve a challenging goal, social activist Dorothy Day said: “People say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time.  A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions.  Each one of our thoughts, words and deeds is like that.  No one has the right to sit down and feel hopeless.  There is too much work to do.”
